  the rare ingredient: a poem by charles bryant
i recently made a video of my poem 'summer holiday.' this additional poem 'the rare ingredient' must have been written around the same time. it is a meditation on the meaning and duration of human love, especially as regards the relationship we were then just embarked upon. i call this a metaphysical poem because it does really, although in a more modern idiom, carry on the enquiries of the metaphysical poets of the sixteenth century, even to the extent of calling in the aid of newtonian physics in the attempt to lay out the boundaries of what is possible. the note of optimism at the end is of a more religious nature, something even the great newton would not have shunned. i think that other than this the poem explains itself sufficently well to make any further observations on my part redundant. the music is elgar's great piano quintet in a minor excellently played by the maggini string quartet with peter donohoe on piano, available from naxos records. the rare ingredient the common bond of previous suffering welds our divergent natures into one and natural sympathy completes the seal. affection reinforces what we feel and the weeks and months together re-cement the original fusing. these ordinary graces constitute the commerce of our friendship's day to day fulfilment, are as much as anyone might hope for, the usual and accepted ground of man's gregarious nature. were this 'much' our all, we should not stay companions as we do nor cling like limpets to the rugged rock. and as for sex - the next best thing to friendship - that's so changeable, fickle and unsure, while, like money, passing from hand to hand, we could not found our firmament on that which turns with every movement of the air. what is the rare ingredient then whose subtle intermixture takes these common substances, transforms their vulgar metals into gold? we grasp the creative matrix in our hands, channel its magic daily; but neither of us understands nor sees the doubly potent force we use. like gravity, it holds us where we are, two shining planets and one central star. but were the invisible field to suddenly move, that would be the ending of our love and neither sex nor friendship then could save us from the whelming of disaffection's wave. here is our uncertainty set down: we cannot control what cannot be seen or touched; the force that bears us up and moves us on, mysteriously potent, awesomely absent, might sometime enter the season of its ebb and beach us on a desolate shore. in the place of certainty, comes this: gravity hardly ever fails on earth from the time of birth to the time of death. and this, which shares its attributes of binding, holding, staying, would not seem ever to be likely to remove its constant presence from our earthly love. let us then be cheered, and tarry yet within the orbit that we cannot see, make sacrifices to the hidden thing and slowly climb from rung to golden rung upon the ladder leaned against our star. who knows?
