hitch hike across canada ver. 2.0
i hitch hiked across canada to see my friends wedding in the summer of 2007

tips and tricks and info:

1. times. it takes about 2 days from vancouver (hope, bc) to calgary. about three to four days to montreal depending on if you get trucker rides. 2 more days to get from montreal to pei and the maritimes. about one day (from morning to night) to get across the maritimes either east to west or north to south.

2. gear.
1 liter water bottle.
1 liter stainless steel thermos.
cell phone (fido is great. make sure to add the rogers wireless network for the extra $5. you can do pay as you go.)
a good sleeping bag. i slept on the side of the road and in bushes.
3 bungy cords for tying shit.
1 medium tarp to save your ass from the rain.
deorderant.
razor.
pocket knife. one with a seration on it is good.
sewing kit. a basic one. just enough to fix tears and rips in your gear.
band aids.
mosquito repelent.
music of some kind. an ipod will save you from going crazy.
a good rucksack that has lots of little pockets so that you can know exactly where every little item is. i.e- a pouch that has your sewing, toothpaste, deorderant, razor. another pouch that has all your socks. another pouch that has all your underwear.
enough underwear and socks for 5 days.

3. tips
keep well shaven and groomed.
smiles.
have hippie showers every day. gas station washrooms can provide you with a sink to clean your pits, face, teeth etc.
dont get stuck on the closer end of a major city. so if you're heading east, dont get dropped off on the western outskirts of a city.
learn some french because there's alot of french in the maritimes. some places dont even speak english.
smell before you get into a car. like... take a deep wiff. smells like booze or chemicals (meth or crack) then don't get in.
trust your gut feeling. if you don't think something's right, then dont get in. a good excuse to say is you're heading to vancouver when full well you know you're heading east, it makes it sound like you're heading in the wrong direction.
hitching with a girl sped up my trip and gave me good company. i hitch hiked across canada to see my friends wedding in the summer of 2007
